Arrange thyroid ultrasound · Dr Krzysztof Chyrek (PL)

What does the scan assess?

  • The size and structure of the thyroid.
  • Echogenicity and the appearance of thyroid tissue.
  • Nodules and other focal abnormalities.
  • The position and characteristics of visible findings.
  • Selected neck structures, depending on the clinical situation.

When may it be appropriate?

Ultrasound may form part of investigation for a palpable neck lump or thickening, an enlarged thyroid, follow-up of known nodules, abnormalities found on another examination or further assessment of thyroid disease.

What happens?

The doctor places an ultrasound probe on the neck and assesses images on a monitor. Ultrasound mainly shows thyroid structure and does not replace blood tests or a medical consultation. Further investigation is selected individually.

What if a nodule is found?

A nodule does not automatically mean serious disease. Its ultrasound features, size, location and your clinical circumstances matter. The doctor may recommend observation, follow-up, blood tests or specialist investigation.

Ultrasound and blood tests

Ultrasound assesses structure. Thyroid hormone function is assessed using symptoms and appropriate laboratory tests, such as TSH and other tests where indicated. The scan is therefore interpreted alongside symptoms, medical history and blood results.

Consultation and further care

Dr Krzysztof Chyrek also assesses selected thyroid problems using symptoms and laboratory results. Depending on your circumstances, earlier results and treatment may be reviewed and further investigation or referral discussed.

Frequently asked questions

Can ultrasound show nodules?

Yes. Their significance is assessed from the images and the overall clinical situation.

Is ultrasound enough to make a diagnosis?

Not always. Hormone function problems usually also require assessment of symptoms and blood tests.

Does every nodule need a biopsy?

No. This depends on features, size and clinical context.

Can I bring results from Poland or the Netherlands?

Yes. Previous scans, blood results and records can help.
