How to use the tools

Care to Translate: ideally, install the app before your appointment. Select English and Dutch, then choose the phrase you need. You can show the translation to the other person or play it aloud. The free library includes ready-made phrases and two languages. You may need a free account to use the app. AI translation of free-flowing conversations is a separate paid feature. You do not need it to use the phrase library.

Google Translate: enter individual words or simple sentences, such as a question about reception. Do not submit your name, BSN, test results or medical records. Voice features depend on your device and app version.

We suggest English and Dutch by default. If you and the doctor prefer another language, you can select it in the tool.

Help with a difficult conversation

If you do not understand the information, tell the staff. Ask for a simpler explanation and for a check that you understand each other.

When discussing a diagnosis, test results, medication doses, procedure risks or consent to treatment, ask the healthcare provider for a professional interpreter or a conversation with an appropriately qualified healthcare professional who speaks a language you understand well. Availability and funding depend on the provider and the situation.

Do not ask a child to interpret. If you are in a consultation room or hospital and need urgent help, speak to staff immediately. Do not wait for an app.

Safety and privacy

Stichting Med Partners provides information and links to independent tools. It does not provide interpreting or translation services through these tools, produce or check their translations, or receive the content of conversations held in them.

Once you open a tool, its provider’s terms apply, including those on privacy, availability and fees. Check them before use. Automatic translation does not replace a professional interpreter or checking that you understand important medical information.

Why we help. Sources

We want to make everyday contact with healthcare in the Netherlands easier for patients who need language support: at the GP (huisarts), a specialist or a hospital.

Pharos explains how to choose language assistance suited to the situation. Rijnstate hospital reports using Care to Translate. This does not mean that every app feature is suitable for every medical conversation.
