Preventive gynaecology

A gynaecological consultation can help you discuss intimate health, menstrual cycles, fertility, menopausal symptoms or heavy and irregular bleeding, including when you have no symptoms. No examination can guarantee that every condition is absent.

Cytology and HPV are different tests

Cytology assesses cells sampled from the cervix. HPV testing detects virus types associated with an increased risk of cervical changes. The choice depends on age, previous results, symptoms and medical history.

What may happen during the consultation?

The doctor first discusses your needs. External and internal examination, liquid-based cytology, microbiological samples, blood tests or transvaginal ultrasound may be appropriate where indicated. Findings and possible next steps are explained. Minor spotting may follow sampling.

Preparation and timing

Tell the practice about pregnancy, bleeding or current intimate symptoms. Bring previous cytology, HPV, colposcopy or tissue results. Confirm preparation for the planned test. Timing is individual. Do not postpone consultation for worrying symptoms simply because of menstruation, pregnancy or waiting for screening.

Sampling and results

The doctor views the cervix with a speculum and takes the sample needed for the test. Sampling is usually brief. Agree how and when the result will be communicated. Contact the practice if the agreed time passes without receiving it.

An abnormal result

A positive HPV test or abnormal cytology does not automatically mean cancer. Interpretation depends on the abnormality, HPV type, cytology, age, previous results and your circumstances. The doctor may advise monitoring, additional tests or further investigation at an appropriate centre. Follow the recommended plan.

Private care and public screening

The Dutch cervical screening programme (bevolkingsonderzoek) is separate from private consultation or testing at Stichting Med Partners. Private care is not automatically a substitute. Tell the doctor about an invitation or result from the programme.

Prevention differs from investigation of symptoms

Assessment of symptoms or abnormal results follows medical indications. Not every gynaecological consultation is a preventive medical examination (PMO).

Costs and reimbursement

Fees depend on the consultation and tests, with possible additional laboratory and material charges. Stichting Med Partners is a non-contracted provider and patients pay directly. Any reimbursement depends on the service, policy, referral requirements and insurer rules; no fixed amount or percentage is guaranteed. Confirm conditions with your insurer before attending.
