Overweight and obesity
Medical assessment of overweight, obesity, risk factors and associated conditions. An individual plan may include lifestyle changes, monitoring and — after medical assessment and where indicated — medication.
Medical assessment
The doctor reviews weight history, previous attempts to lose weight, conditions, medication, diet, physical activity, metabolic and cardiovascular risk, and your goals. Obesity needs a wider assessment than weight alone.
Investigations
Your history and health may indicate assessment of glucose, lipids, liver function, blood pressure or thyroid function. Not everyone needs the same test package.
Lifestyle as the foundation
Food, activity, sleep and other factors affecting weight and metabolic health form part of long-term care. The aim is better health and fewer complications, rather than rapid weight loss alone.
Medication
The doctor assesses indications, contraindications, associated conditions, existing medication and possible adverse effects. A consultation does not guarantee a prescription. Where appropriate, medication is part of a wider plan that includes lifestyle and regular monitoring.
Associated conditions
Particular attention may be needed for type 2 diabetes or abnormal glucose, hypertension, lipid disorders, thyroid disease, fatty liver, sleep problems and limitations to physical activity.
Your individual plan
Health, previous experiences, circumstances, goals and safety determine the plan. It may include lifestyle advice, metabolic monitoring, follow-up and treatment of associated conditions. Being overweight with additional risk factors can also be a reason to seek assessment.
