What can be assessed?

The scope depends on clinical indications, symptoms and how well structures can be seen.

  • Liver: size, structure and visible abnormalities.
  • Gallbladder: visible abnormalities that may need further investigation.
  • Pancreas: parts visible on ultrasound.
  • Kidneys: size, structure and selected abnormalities.
  • Bladder: according to indications and preparation.
  • Other accessible abdominal structures where relevant.

When may abdominal ultrasound help?

The clinical context determines whether a scan is needed. Reasons may include abdominal pain or discomfort, recurrent digestive symptoms, suspected bile duct problems, further assessment after a consultation, follow-up of known findings, abnormal laboratory results or additional diagnostic assessment.

What happens?

Ultrasound uses sound waves to image organs and tissues, without ionising radiation.

  1. The doctor asks about symptoms, previous results and the reason for the scan.
  2. Gel is applied to the skin and the probe is moved over the abdomen.
  3. Results are discussed in the context of your clinical concern and further care.

Preparation

Depending on the examination, fasting or a suitably full bladder may be required. Follow the appointments team's instructions. Bring previous scans or other results and an up-to-date medication list. Mention significant long-term conditions or particular needs when booking.

Why is there no single instruction for everyone?

Thuisarts patient information also describes different preparations: sometimes drinking water, sometimes fasting. You should receive instructions for your specific examination.
