Cervical cytology, HPV testing and gynaecological ultrasound
A gynaecological assessment helps examine the cervix, uterus and ovaries and investigate concerning symptoms or abnormal previous results. Dr Barbara Blicharczyk tailors investigations to your age, symptoms, medical history and previous results.
What may a consultation include?
- Gynaecological examination.
- Taking a sample for cervical cytology.
- HPV testing.
- Transvaginal gynaecological ultrasound.
- Review of previous cytology or HPV results.
- Discussion of further steps after an abnormal result.
Not every patient needs all these tests at the same time. The doctor selects investigations for your clinical circumstances.
When may a consultation be useful?
- For a gynaecological assessment.
- After an abnormal cytology or HPV result.
- For bleeding between periods, after sex or after the menopause.
- For recurrent or unusual vaginal discharge.
- For lower abdominal or pelvic pain.
- For previously diagnosed fibroids, ovarian cysts or other findings requiring follow-up.
- To discuss earlier investigations or obtain a gynaecologist's opinion.
Gynaecological ultrasound
Transvaginal ultrasound can assess the uterus, the uterine lining (endometrium), the ovaries, fibroids, ovarian cysts and other visible abnormalities. Ultrasound does not replace cytology or HPV testing: these investigations assess different aspects of gynaecological health.
Do you already have results?
Bring previous cytology, HPV, colposcopy, histology or ultrasound results. These help the doctor assess your situation and plan further care.
The Dutch national screening programme
The Netherlands has a national cervical cancer screening programme, Bevolkingsonderzoek baarmoederhalskanker. If invited, you can participate. A consultation with Dr Barbara Blicharczyk does not replace the programme. It can provide additional assessment, investigation of symptoms or review of previous results.
